A Candle for Everyone
by H.O.P.C
The night smelled of old rain and damp asphalt. The yellow streetlight stretched the shadows long and thin. The man stood among the fractured lines of iron and glass, gazing quietly at the two cats sitting before him. The small candle on the cake flickered, its flame dancing in the breeze but refusing to go out. He smiled. “It’s my birthday tonight,” he murmured, his voice barely audible in the cold alley. The cats tilted their heads, as if they understood. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a few scraps of food, and placed them on the ground. The cats cautiously stepped forward, their eyes glowing in the darkness. He knelt down, gently running his fingers over the soft fur of one of them. The warmth of its body against his fingertips felt like something close to peace. This year, no birthday messages had lit up his phone. No friends had knocked on his door. But he was here, in this moment, with two creatures who wanted nothing from him—except a little kindness. The candle on the cake kept burning, but he made no wish. Tonight, simply sharing his birthday with those who needed love was enough. A soft breeze passed through. The flame flickered and went out, but the man’s smile remained.
