The Road Does Not End... It Waits...

#617gallery The Road Does Not End... It Waits... Cold comes before the dark fully settles... Temperature... intention... The kind of cold that has been deciding... for a long time... Lanterns... Faithful, in the way that things are faithful when they have no choice... burning their small circles into the mist... illuminating precisely enough to make the darkness on either side... more absolute by comparison... They were placed here for comfort... They achieve the opposite... The mist moves the way silk moves... slowly... completely... with the patience of something that understands it will eventually cover everything.... It does not rush... It has done this before... It knows exactly how long it takes... for the wet air to close around a road, around a tree line, around the particular shape standing between the lights... that was not there an hour ago and offers no explanation for its arrival.... Look at it long enough and it shifts... Or it doesn't... That uncertainty is the point... The old stories are specific about one thing... not the hook... not the hunting... not the vanishing without sign... They are specific about the waiting... That he does not pursue... That he has never needed to... That the road curves just past the second light in a way that brings every brave one, every curious one... every one who told themselves the stories were only stories, to... exactly the same point.... Within reach... The night creatures are already awake... You simply cannot hear them yet over the sound of your own breathing... which has become... you notice, considerably louder than it was when you started walking.... The figure between the lights does not move... It is very good at waiting... It has had considerable practice... Monster awaits...
